Google's Virtual Try-on (VTO) technology is revolutionizing the online shopping experience for fashion and beauty enthusiasts. It is designed to make the process of buying apparel online more like shopping in-store, with realistic image try-ons that provide more size- and skin-tone-inclusive options for customers. VTO also offers apparel choices that mimic the service a customer would get with a personal sales associate.

What does Behavioral Science say?

Studies have shown that many online shoppers do not feel represented by images of models, and many feel dissatisfied with an item they shopped for online because it looked different on them than expected.

. The new VTO guided refinements are designed to help shoppers refine their product choices using inputs like color, style, and pattern. This allows shoppers to narrow down their selections to items that they feel are most likely to look good on them.

Why Is This Topic So Important?

This may be due to a combination of factors, such as differences in body shape, clothing size, and skin tone between the model and the shopper. Additionally, shoppers may not be able to accurately judge the fit or style of an item because the model wearing the item may not be of similar size or shape as them.

With Virtual Try-ons or VTO, shoppers are not limited to one retailer, as they can see options from stores across the web. This helps shoppers find the perfect item for them and gives them the confidence to purchase it, knowing that it will look as expected when they receive it.

How Google is changing this with Virtual Try-ons?

Google's VTO is the most advanced version of Augmented Reality (AR) try-on options. AR is a technology that combines the real world with virtual elements.

The VTO technology uses the Shopping Graph, Google's worldwide database of shopping information, along with a process known as "diffusion." In diffusion, extra pixels (known as "noise") are gradually added to an image and then removed, leaving behind an imprint or reconstruction of the original image.

This process is combined with an AI model trained with a library of images showing human models wearing garments in different poses. As a result, shoppers are able to generate a more accurate try-on image.
